Integrating Case-Based Reasoning, Rule-Based Reasoning and Intelligent Information Retrieval for Medical Problem-Solving
This paper proposes a multimodal reasoning framework for the cooperation of case-based reasoning, rule-based reasoning and information retrieval to solve problems. Functionally, it offers via the WWW knowledge-support assistance to clinicians responsible for the long-term followup of stem-cell post-transplant patient care. In this domain, no single knowledge source can address the range of prob...
متن کاملWhat You Saw Is What You Want: Using Cases to Seed Information Retrieval
This paper presents a hybrid case-based reasoning (CBR) and information retrieval (IR) system, called SPIRE, that both retrieves documents from a full-text document corpus and from within individual documents, and locates passages likely to contain information about important problem-solving features of cases. SPIRE uses two case-bases, one containing past precedents, and one containing excerpt...
متن کاملDefining Knowledge Layers for Textual Case-Based Reasoning
Textual CBR applications deal with problems that have traditionally been addressed by the Information Retrieval community, namely the handling of textual documents. Since CBR is an AI technique, the questions arise as to what kind of knowledge may enhance the system, where this knowledge comes from, and how it contributes to the performance of such a system. We will address these questions in t...
متن کاملFeature Extraction - The Bridge from Case-Based Reasoning to Information Retrieval
Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and Information Retrieval (IR) are two historically disjoint technologies. This paper contends that the time has now come for CBR and IR to be conjoined in order to collaboratively solve many of the text retrieval problems faced by modern companies. In particular, it will be argued that the two technologies fundamentally differ in terms of the type of information retr...
متن کاملTask-Based Knowledge Management
Case-based reasoning is receiving much attention as a technology for building knowledge repositories that can be queried for task-relevant information. Taking the CBR problem-solving model seriously, however, suggests the value of a much stronger integration between knowledge management systems and the tasks that they serve. In this integrated view, knowledge management systems should be design...
